Tax time can painful. Even before you know if you have to pay or you are getting a refund, you have to fill out the appropriate forms.
If you are using tax prep software, do you know about the IRS’s free file program? There are 10 companies that participate in the program this year; and they’re all a little different.
If you had adjusted gross income of $72,000 or less in 2020 you can prepare and e-file your federal tax return for free. Your State form may be free, depends on the company. BEWARE: don’t just search “file taxes for free” because unfortunately, some firms play games with search terms. SIGH.

If you don’t qualify for the free program, but your taxes are pretty simple, a different program just has fillable forms. Find them at: www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/free-file-fillable-forms.
